Merschbrock Law | The Lien Resolution Firm

Speaking at the Oklahoma Paralegal Association: Lien Resolution 101

On May 12, 2026, I will be presenting Lien Resolution 101 as part of the Oklahoma Paralegal Association’s May Lunch & Learn webinar series. The session begins at 12:00 PM Central and is open to OPA members, non-members, and paralegal students. The webinar also satisfies NALA Certified Paralegal CLE requirements.

This presentation is built specifically for paralegals who handle lien work inside plaintiff personal injury firms. Lien resolution is one of the most underrated skill sets in PI practice. Done well, it puts more money in the client’s pocket, protects the firm from compliance exposure, and closes files faster. Done poorly, it stalls settlements, erodes net recovery, and creates risk no one wants.

What the session covers

The presentation walks through a practical, repeatable workflow for identifying, verifying, negotiating, and resolving liens in third party recovery cases. Topics include:

  • The categories of liens that appear in personal injury matters, including ERISA plans, Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, FEHBA, Tricare, hospital liens, and outstanding provider bills
  • How to identify which lien type you are actually dealing with, and why the answer changes everything that follows
  • The verification documents to request from each lien holder and what to do when they refuse to produce them
  • Common reduction levers and the legal authority behind them
  • Documentation and closing practices that protect the firm and the client

Why this matters for paralegals

In most plaintiff firms, paralegals are the first line of defense on lien issues. They are the ones reading EOBs, working with recovery vendors, building case ledgers, and pushing back when a reimbursement number does not look right. The attorneys rely on them. The clients rely on them. And the recovery vendors absolutely know when a paralegal does not know what to ask for.

The goal of Lien Resolution 101 is to give paralegals the framework, vocabulary, and confidence to handle the day to day lien work, and to know exactly when to escalate.
